The Emirates Medical Association has an Emirates Medical Journal (EMJ) published every 4 months and distributed to the EMA members free of charge.  The editor in chief is Mr. Essa Kazim, assistant editor is Dr. Mouza Al Sharhan and Dr. Najeeb Khajah is the associate editor.

The Emirates Medical Journal had its inaugural issue in April 1980.   The EMJ is now in its 24th Year of Publication.

The Emirates Medical Journal is published three times in a year in April / August / December and continues to be the only official scientific medical publication from the United Arab Emirates with a wide readership, not only regionally but internationally. 

Around 3000 copies of each issue are printed and distributed to all Members of the Emirates Medical Association as well as to all the hospitals of the Ministry of Health, the Department of Health & Medical Services, the UAE University, the Armed Force Hospital, as well as to all private clinics and private hospitals.  In addition, the Emirates Medical Journal also enjoys a wide distribution throughout the Gulf, other Arab States, Far East and Europe. The Emirates Medical Journal covers all aspects of medical and surgical fields and is read by most of the working doctors in the UAE. 

The purpose of the journal is of course a platform in which clinicians and researchers can publish regional work. The articles are published in different categories, including editorials, review articles, original paper, research papers, clinical case reports, etc.  A new addition is the inclusion of abstracts of research work done by the medical students at the UAE University.

The editorial board consists mainly of professors and experts from a broad spectrum of specialties from the Faculty of Medicine, UAE University.  Their role is to assist the editor in the peer-review process and to provide a consensus opinion on doubtful matters regarding manuscript publication.  There are representatives on the editorial board also from the Emirates Medical Association, the official sponsor of the EMJ. 

An average of 90 papers are received during the year, both locally and internationally.  Upon receiving a manuscript, an acknowledgement is sent to the corresponding author.  Each manuscript undergoes a peer-review process as follows:

1. The manuscript is sent to a minimum of 3 referees and a copy of the referee form is attached with it for the referees to fill in and send their comments.
2. If the manuscript requires editorial revision, this is done by the Assistant Editor and checked by the Editor.
3. Should the manuscript require author revision, the referees replied are conveyed to the author.  Upon resubmission the authors are requested to itemize any changes made in the original manuscript.
4. Revised manuscripts are checked against referees’ suggestions.
5. All statistics within the manuscript are checked by the Statistics Editor.
6. All manuscripts accepted for publications, page-proof is sent to the corresponding author for approval prior to publication.
7. The journal has built a database of international experts in various fields, who voluntarily offer their services as referees.

The Emirates Medical Journal is a beneficiary of an endowment from Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences.  This is an international award open to all medical professionals worldwide.

Four best original research papers published in the EMJ are selected, each 2 years, by a panel of consultants from the office of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashed Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences.  Cash prizes are distributed to the authors of the selected papers during the Dubai International Conferences for Medical Sciences which are held each 2 years under the patronage of H.H. Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, & Minister of Finance & Industry.
